People line up for lower car registration plate numbers

The frigid February weather and wet falling snow couldn’t keep more than 70 people from lining up outside the Courthouse before 8 a.m. Monday for a chance at low numbered Campbell County number plates.

Snow was already collecting on Carhartt-clad shoulders and folding lawn chairs before 6 a.m. as the line stretching down Gillette Avenue grew even longer. Those in the front of the line had been there since Sunday and they were eager for the doors to open.

Reserved number plates (those numbers under 2500) are only up for grabs once every eight years when newly designed state license plates are issued. Those that aren’t renewed by Jan. 31 are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The car registration plate numbers that will be available aren’t known until the County Treasurer’s office opens, making those people closer to the front of the line the lucky ones.

Eric Hoppes was first through the door. He set up his lawn chair about noon Sunday and spent the night in his vehicle so he could grab the lowest two truck and motorcycle number plates.
