California drivers won’t be able to style their cars with specialized number plates featuring the Golden Gate Bridge or Sierra Nevada.
The number plates—which would’ve raised money for parks, wildlife and environmental restoration in the Bay Area and Sierra Nevada—failed to draw enough public interest to be made.
The Department of Motor Vehicles won’t produce the plates unless sponsors can gather at least 7,500 prepaid orders in one year.
The proposed Golden Gate Bridge plate only sold 550 copies. The Sierra Nevada plate, featuring a bear and a mountain, only sold 278 copies.
Sponsors say the down economy was a factor. The plates cost $50 a year.
