According to the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, 36 teen drivers and 8 teen passengers were killed in traffic crashes in 2009 in the state; in 2008, 36 teen drivers and 23 teen passengers lost their lives in vehicle crash. Nationally, 6,000 teens are killed and approximately 300,000 injured in crashes each year.
On May 1, changes to the New Jersey Graduated Driver License (GDL) Law, enacted in 2001, go into effect to help further reduce the incidence of teen driver and passenger fatalities. All teens currently holding a permit or provisional (restricted) license must comply with the changes in addition to those who are issued a permit or provisional license on or after May 1.
