POLICE officers will be fixing tamper proof screws for free to clamp down on number plate thieves.
Members of Coldharbour and New Eltham Safer Neighbourhoods Teams will be at the Dagenham Motors Ford dealer, in Five Ways, Eltham, on April 2, where the dealers have agreed to supply an engineer to fit the screws.
PC Nick Knight, from the Coldharbour and New Eltham team said: “We have recorded an increase in theft of number plates in the area of Coldharbour and New Eltham.
“The stolen number plates are mounted onto cars used to commit crimes such as theft of fuel from petrol stations and non payment of the congestion charge.
“We want people to come along on Saturday and ensure that we fit their number plates with the tamper proof screws.”
