Specialty license plates celebrating the St. Johns River are available now through tax collectors’ tag offices.
The plates, which show a kayaker paddling the river near a flying heron, cost $25 more than standard plates. That premium is used to raise money for the St. Johns River Alliance, a nonprofit group responsible for awarding grants for river improvement and research projects, plus public outreach and springs protection.
The plates are also a tribute to the late Sen. Jim King, R-Jacksonville, a river advocate whose name appears on the side of the kayak.
