A new system for smart number plates is on test. The new plates could help identify a vehicle even if it flees the scene after an accident as it will have a built in microchip tracking device.
The system will have a tracking device installed with retro-reflective number plates and radio frequency identification tags.
Similar systems are already in use by insurance companies which are often linked to young driver policies. Public opinion is that this built in tracker would be a step too far.
The smart number plates consultation process will continue for some time.
