Two Million Drivers Reduce Car Tax Bill to Zero by Declaring Vehicles Off-Road

Two Million Drivers Reduce Car Tax Bill to Zero by Declaring Vehicles Off-Road

A recent surge in Statutory Off-Road Notifications (SORN) filings indicates that millions of British drivers are taking steps to minimize car ownership costs. This trend coincides with an impending rise in Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), commonly referred to as car tax, which is set to increase in line with inflation starting April 2024.

Data compiled by Scrap Car Comparison reveals that over two million vehicles were declared SORN between January and September 2023. This represents a significant increase of more than 52% compared to the same period in 2022. The SORN designation allows car owners to temporarily suspend their vehicle's road tax and licensing requirements if the vehicle is not being driven on public roads.

The decision to SORN a vehicle is driven by several factors. One primary motivator is undoubtedly the rising cost of car ownership. In the current economic climate, characterized by an ongoing cost-of-living crisis, many individuals are seeking methods to save money. SORNing a vehicle that is not in regular use offers a straightforward way to eliminate car tax payments during that period.

Another potential reason for the SORN surge could be a shift in driving habits. With the increasing popularity of remote work and alternative transportation options like ride-sharing and cycling, some car owners may no longer require their vehicles on a daily basis. SORNing a car that is used infrequently can generate significant cost savings.

The financial benefits of SORN registration are undeniable. The current flat rate for car tax in the UK is £180 annually. However, the recent budget announcement confirmed an inflation-linked increase in VED, which will take effect in April 2024. This translates to a potential rise of several pounds or more for millions of drivers. By declaring their vehicles SORN before the deadline, astute car owners were able to capitalize on the opportunity to avoid these impending tax hikes.

While SORNing a vehicle offers clear financial advantages, it's crucial to understand the implications and limitations associated with this process. A vehicle with SORN status cannot be legally driven on public roads. If a car is driven while SORN, the owner faces potential fines and penalties. Additionally, SORN vehicles cannot be parked on public roads; they must be stored off-road on private property.

The decision to SORN a vehicle should be based on individual circumstances and driving habits. For those who rarely use their cars or plan to keep them off the road for an extended period, SORNing can be a prudent strategy to reduce car ownership costs. However, it's vital to comply with the regulations associated with SORN status to avoid legal repercussions.

Key Considerations Before Declaring SORN

Frequency of Vehicle Use: If you anticipate using your car regularly, even for occasional trips, then SORNing may not be the most suitable option.
Off-Road Storage Location: You must have access to private property for storing a SORN vehicle. Parking a SORN car on public roads is strictly prohibited.
Maintaining Insurance Coverage: While car tax is suspended during the SORN period, it's advisable to maintain at least third-party insurance coverage for your vehicle. This will protect you financially in the event of accidental damage while the car is parked off-road.
Renewing SORN Status: A SORN declaration remains valid for a maximum period of one year. To maintain SORN status beyond the initial year, you will need to renew it online or by mail.

The surge in SORN registrations highlights the increasing cost pressures faced by British car owners. By strategically declaring their vehicles SORN before the VED increase, millions of drivers were able to minimize their car tax burden. Understanding the eligibility requirements, restrictions, and ongoing obligations associated with SORN is essential before making an informed decision for your vehicle.

On our website, we offer a number plate search feature that lets you enter words, letters or numbers that you would like to see in the number plate of your dreams.

Try it out with words you would like to incorporate into your private number plate, such as a name, nickname, age or keyword (such as a hobby or passion).

You can use the general search to find any and all matching plates, or you can use our ‘prefix style’ search to search for plates that end in three letters of your choice, but have any combination at the start.

Alternatively, the ‘current search’ will allow you to specify two letters at the start and / or the age identifier numbers in the middle, and / or the final three letters at the end of the plate.

A final option for searching for your dream number plate is to use our ‘dateless search’ option, where you can find number plates that do not have a date identifier. These cherished plates are especially popular for vintage and classic cars, and are often the most prized of all personalised number plates.

Through this range of search options, you can go a long way towards finding your perfect personalised number plate. You could search for a Bob, a Tim, a Lou or a Ted, or you could include numbers that are meaningful to you in some way, such as your age, year of birth, or the year you got married. Do remember that drivers are not legally allowed to use a registration plate that makes a car look younger than it actually is (so a car built in 2012 can’t have a 2014 registration number).
