Motorists Face Hefty Fines for Overlooked Number Plate Issue
Reg Plates ArticleMotorists Face Hefty Fines for Overlooked Number Plate Issue

Failing to maintain a clean and visible number plate could land drivers in hot water, with fines of up to £1,000 potentially on the horizon. This common oversight, often caused by dirt or grime accumulation, can easily go unnoticed, but it could have serious consequences.
The Highway Code clearly stipulates that number plates must be "clearly visible" at all times. This means that any obstruction, whether it's dirt, snow, or even a poorly positioned parking permit, could put drivers in breach of the law.
Experts warn that failing to adhere to these regulations could result in a hefty fine of up to £1,000. Moreover, the vehicle may fail its MOT test if the number plate is not clearly visible.
To avoid these costly penalties, drivers are advised to regularly check their number plates and ensure they are free from any obstructions. A simple wipe with a damp cloth can make a world of difference and keep you on the right side of the law.
Tampered number plates are a serious problem in many countries. They can be used to avoid detection by law enforcement, to commit crimes, or to avoid paying tolls or parking fees.
Types of tampered number plates
There are many different ways to tamper with a number plate. Some of the most common methods include:
Painting over or obscuring numbers or letters
Using stickers or tape to cover numbers or letters
Bending or twisting the number plate
Using a fake number plate
Risks of tampered number plates
Tampered number plates can have a number of serious consequences, including:

Difficulty selling your car
How to prevent tampered number plates
There are a number of things you can do to prevent your number plates from being tampered with, including:
Using security screws to attach your number plates
Keeping your car in a secure location
Reporting any suspicious activity to the police
If you see a tampered number plate
If you see a tampered number plate, you should report it to the police immediately. You can do this by calling the police non-emergency number or by filing an online report.
It is important to remember that tampered number plates are a serious crime. If you are caught with tampered number plates, you could face serious consequences.
In addition to the legal risks, tampered number plates can also be a safety hazard. For example, if a police officer is unable to identify a vehicle, they may be unable to apprehend a criminal suspect.
Please help to keep our roads safe by reporting any tampered number plates you see.
So what are the top selling number plates in the UK? The DVLA has been selling private plates to UK motorists since 1989. During this time, there have been a number of records set, but most of the top 10 have been bought in the past 15 years. Here’s what currently makes the list:
- 25 0 – A Ferrari dealer bought this for £518k in 2014. It is now on a £10 million Ferrari 250 SWB.
- F 1 – A businessman, Afzal Khan, bought this for £440k in 2008 and put it on his McLaren-Mercedes SLR.
- S 1 – This was bought in 2008 for £404k by an anonymous buyer.
- 1 D – Businessman Nabil Bishara bought this plate in 2009 (before One Direction was formed, so it is not a reference to the band) for £352k.
- M 1 – Businessman Mike McCoomb bought this number plate in 2006 for £331k, apparently for his son, who was 10 at the time.
- VIP 1 – Chelsea owner and businessman Roman Abramovich bought this plate for £285k in 2006.
- 51 NGH – This number plate, which looks like the surname Singh, was sold in 2006 for £254k.
- 1 RH – Businessman Robert Haverson bought this in 2006 for £247k.
- K1 NGS – This reg plate, which looks like the word “kings”, was bought anonymously in 1993 for £231k.
- 1 0 – This very simple but striking number plate was bought anonymously in 2009 for £170k.
These are large amounts of money, but they are all small compared to the top-selling number plates found in other parts of the world. Abu Dhabi, in the UAE, has the record for the most expensive number plate ever sold. That number plate was a simple “1”. It was bought in 2008 by businessman Saeed Abdul Ghaffar Khouri for £7.25 million.
