The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has announced new targets for processing driving licence and vehicle registration applications. The agency aims to dispatch 95% of online applications within three days and 90% of postal applications within 10 working days. Additionally, the DVLA is working to create a "dynamic digital organisation" that will expand the services available online, starting with the 10-year driving licence renewal service. The agency is also committed to making licensing decisions on medical cases within 90 days with a 90% success rate. These new targets and initiatives are designed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the DVLA and make it easier for motorists to get the documents they need.
The DVLA has set new ambitious performance targets for itself, recognizing the need for substantial changes in the years to come to accommodate the introduction of Vehicle Excise Duty for electric vehicles in 2025. Lesley Cowley OBE, non-executive chair of the DVLA, commended the new targets and the agency's efforts to keep drivers on the road. She emphasized the importance of meeting customer expectations for prompt and efficient services, particularly in the timely delivery of critical documents such as driving licenses, tachograph cards, and vehicle registration certificates. In instances where services depend on external reports or inputs, such as those from medical professionals, the DVLA will strive to minimize any resulting delays within its control.
Transferring from a Retention Certificate to a Vehicle
As before, the online process is the easiest to go through if you want to transfer a registration number currently covered by a retention certificate onto a vehicle. You can do it online.
You can also do it by post. You will need your retention certificate and the vehicle registration certificate of the vehicle you are transferring the registration to.
For both the online and postal methods, you will receive a new vehicle registration certificate in the post.
The current cost for transferring a vehicle registration is £80 and it can take 5-10 days to complete. However, the introduction of the online system has made the process much smoother than it used to be.
