A call has been made for the Mayor of Bornemouth to auction off his prized personalised number plate APR 1 to raise funds for the council.
The suggestion comes from trade union UNISON, which represents some council workers, as one easy way to cut back while saving jobs.
Last year the APR1 number plate was valued at £30,000, the same as the Mayor’s car itself.
Negotiations between the council and the union on a raft of money-saving proposals, including a voluntary redundancy trawl, are due to end in the autumn.
Robert Oxley, campaign manager of the TaxPayers’ Alliance said: “It’s absolutely shocking that Poole Council still has money invested in a vanity number plate.
This is a great example of the rising values of high quality personalised number plates.
