Motorists can now buy blue number plates to help in the fight against prostate cancer.
The NSW government announced the initiative to support the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) on Monday – 100 years after number plates were first used on the state’s roads.
“This is a real opportunity for people to make a difference,” NSW Roads Minster David Borger told reporters in Sydney.
“I think people are happy to wear the badge to show they are supporters of good causes.”
The partnership with the PCFA was prompted by the success of pink plates, with more than $120,000 raised for breast cancer at the McGrath Foundation since April 2009.
Mr Borger announced the government was committed to the pink plate campaign, which had been due to end on June 30 this year.
“It’s fantastic to see how much motorists have really taken to the idea,” he said.
Blue plates, which have been on the road since 2003, will join the pink charity plates, with the government donating $15 from their sale – and $50 from the sale of personalised plates – to the PCFA and the McGrath Foundation respectively.
