New Lexington Number Plate Agency

A Lexington branch of the N.C. License Plate Agency will open Oct. 5. The contractor for the office is Becky Klass, a member of the Lexington City Council.

The office will be at 27 Plaza Parkway off N.C. Highway 8 South in the space that formerly housed Radio Shack in the Lexington Parkway Plaza shopping center. A ribbon cutting is planned for noon Oct. 4.

“I look forward to serving the public,” Klass said. “I think it’ll be a fun, stressful job.”

Marge Howell, a spokeswoman for the N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles, said Klass was selected from among 30 people who applied for the job. Branches of license plate offices are operated by private contractors, though they’re under the supervision of the DMV.

Klass said the office she’s going to be supervising measures about 2,000 square feet. She said her goal is to make the building a nice one.

“We’re putting in granite countertops as we speak,” Klass said Thursday.

The office must adhere to a number of state codes, including compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
