After weeks touting the event, the company, My Plates, announced Monday it was moving the auction from the original Sept. 22 date because it lacked state approval for all its designs.
The company has drawn increased scrutiny recently from state officials over the auction promotions and its contract to design, sell and market personalized plates.
It had not previously expressed concerns about the approval timeline, but “coupled with the looming deadline of the auction, they may have thought that this is like rolling the dice,” said Department of Motor Vehicles Executive Director Edward Serna.
He said the company met with the agency’s staff about a week ago to discuss the date change.
Technically, auction bidders will be vying for desired combinations – such as HUNTING or NASC4R – which then would be paired with their choice of a background design.
