Number Plate of the Beast!

A Scottish pensioner accused of careless driving was acquitted following a court hearing, which bizarrely centred on her car registration bearing the ‘number of the beast’.

Skye guesthouse owner Sally Phelps had been accused of driving too close to a pair of cyclists on a single track road between Portee and Uig on the island, apparently causing them to wobble, the Daily Record reports.

However, in proceedings which at times seemed more befitting 17th Century Massachusetts, the hearing focussed on suspicions that the female cyclists may have taken exception to Phelps’ devilish registration plate, which reads ‘S666 SKY’.

One of the pair, in giving evidence, apparently told the court that she was a Christian, and said that she had “felt the heat” of the black Volvo as it overtook.

However, the cyclists asserted that their complaint against Phelps had nothing to do with “the devil’s number”.

Despite this, defence solicitor Duncan Burd went on the attack at Portee’s Justice of the Peace Court. He said that the pair had “concocted this allegation due to the number and its association with the devil”.

Apparently “flourishing” a bible, Burd then read from Revelation 13:18, and pointed out how the number ‘666’ symbolises Satan or the Antichrist.

“The two cyclists were annoyed at the devil’s car going past them so decided to report her to the police,” he added.
