The Florida Lighthouse Association (FLA) has awarded the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum a $10,000 grant to preserve its historic structures. The award was announced at a members meeting recently in Cedar Key.
Since the Junior Service League of St. Augustine completed a $1.2 million restoration in 1994, the not-for-profit museum has nearly spent an additional $1.5 million to preserve their historic structures. St. Augustine’s maritime museum will use this new grant to restore some of the historic walking surfaces around the Keepers’ House.
“The porches on our keepers’ house were restored in the 1980s, and after more than 23 years in a salt environment and thousands of visitors passing over them, they are at the end of their lifespan,” said Deputy Director Rick Cain of the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum.
