New Numberplate System in April –

The current new car registration numbers start with the letter Y. It is estimated that Gauteng will have exhausted its number series by the end of October.
On average, 43 000 vehicles are registered in Gauteng each month.
The biggest challenge the current number plate system faces, is that it cannot be effectively policed.

The Gauteng department of roads and transport is set to roll out the new intelligent number plate system for the province as from April 1.
The new vehicle registration plate project is in response to the fact that Gauteng will soon run out of the licence numbers series for the current system.

As a result the distribution of plates from certain quarters will be strictly prohibited.
“The Gauteng department of roads and transport will be aware of each transaction as it occurs,” says Gauteng Transport’s MEC, Bheki Nkosi.
The cost to the motorist is projected to be an additional amount of R50 to the current cost of securing number plates, which would set the minimum prize of the new plates between R150 and R170, depending on supply and demand market transactions.
