Ohioans gobble up colorful license plates
Ohio’s new sun-kissed license plate had a long and difficult journey to motorists’ cars, but it’s proving to be popular.
Since the new “Beautiful Ohio” plate went on sale Nov. 23, the state Bureau of Motor Vehicles has sold 182,399 of them for cars, trailers and motorcycles, bureau officials told The Dispatch. (The number for passenger cars represents pairs of plates, since drivers must affix them to the front and back of their cars.)
The old “sunburst” design has sold 71,172 plates in the same period, according to the bureau.
Last spring, state officials mothballed the new “Beautiful Ohio” plate despite months of work on the design by dozens of people, including first lady Frances Strickland. Officials blamed the bad economy.
