The Motor Car Act 1903, which came into force on 1 January 1904, required all motor vehicles to be entered on an official vehicle register, and to carry number plates. The Act was passed in order that vehicles could be easily traced in the event of an accident or contravention of the law. Vehicle registration number plates in the UK are rectangular or square in shape, with the exact permitted dimensions of the plate and its lettering set down in law.

There was a time when you would rarely see a personalised number plate on Britain's roads. When you did see one, it would often be on an ultra-expensive car in an exclusive location. Now, personalised registrations are everywhere.
New legislation required all vehicles registered post 1st of January 1990, to have catalytic converters installed. This caused an issue for those vehicles which had been in storage for a while as they were produced before the 1990 deadline, but would have been sold after the date of legislation. However, number plates began to run out once again towards the end of the 90s. It was time for the development of a system that could be simple for people to understand and read without changing the regular size of plates.
Number plates were in the format of X111 XXX. The first letter identified the age of the car by referencing a period of time it was produced in. For example, P meant the car was produced between August 1996 & July 1997. The three numbers are randomly assigned and the first two letters told you where the car was registered. The final letter was also random.
