The Motor Car Act 1903, which came into force on 1 January 1904, required all motor vehicles to be entered on an official vehicle register, and to carry number plates. The Act was passed in order that vehicles could be easily traced in the event of an accident or contravention of the law. Vehicle registration number plates in the UK are rectangular or square in shape, with the exact permitted dimensions of the plate and its lettering set down in law.

Number plates were in the format of X111 XXX. The first letter identified the age of the car by referencing a period of time it was produced in. For example, P meant the car was produced between August 1996 & July 1997. The three numbers are randomly assigned and the first two letters told you where the car was registered. The final letter was also random.
The currently used format, as of 2020, was first introduced in 2001. This used two number identifiers instead of the previously used one. The new system uses the first number to identify which part of the year the car was registered, i.e. 5 means the car was registered between the 1st of September and the end of February. This helped alleviate issues with people only wanting to buy cars just as they are released, as this happens twice per year now.
According to current legislation, you can legally use cherished and vanity registration plates on a car that is newer than the original date of registration. However, you cannot transfer a license that has a later date than the car, bike, etc that it will be used on. This avoids the ability to mislead consumers with incorrect dates of registration.
