The Motor Car Act 1903, which came into force on 1 January 1904, required all motor vehicles to be entered on an official vehicle register, and to carry number plates. The Act was passed in order that vehicles could be easily traced in the event of an accident or contravention of the law. Vehicle registration number plates in the UK are rectangular or square in shape, with the exact permitted dimensions of the plate and its lettering set down in law.

According to current legislation, you can legally use cherished and vanity registration plates on a car that is newer than the original date of registration. However, you cannot transfer a license that has a later date than the car, bike, etc that it will be used on. This avoids the ability to mislead consumers with incorrect dates of registration.
Number plates were officially introduced in 1903 with the A 1 series. These private plates started at A 1 and ended at YY 9988 and was in use until 1932. The first letter was used to identify the location in which the license plate was initially registered. For example, A indicated that the number plate was registered in London.
