The Motor Car Act 1903, which came into force on 1 January 1904, required all motor vehicles to be entered on an official vehicle register, and to carry number plates. The Act was passed in order that vehicles could be easily traced in the event of an accident or contravention of the law. Vehicle registration number plates in the UK are rectangular or square in shape, with the exact permitted dimensions of the plate and its lettering set down in law.

As the popularity of personalised number plates began to grow, they became more and more expensive. In 2008 a number plate, S 1, was bought at an auction for £397,500 by an anonymous buyer. This plate was originally purchased by Sir John H A MacDonald, who at the time was the Lord Kingsburgh. This license plate was actually the first plate ever produced for Edinburgh.
You may not have noticed by in 2001 the way number plates were generated changed entirely to a new system. Before then, a different system was in place from 1983.
Over recent years, the growth in popularity of personalised number plates has been consistent. When you look at the figures, that's not even the most interesting part. The more interesting element is how much more popular they have become.
