The Motor Car Act 1903, which came into force on 1 January 1904, required all motor vehicles to be entered on an official vehicle register, and to carry number plates. The Act was passed in order that vehicles could be easily traced in the event of an accident or contravention of the law. Vehicle registration number plates in the UK are rectangular or square in shape, with the exact permitted dimensions of the plate and its lettering set down in law.

The AAA 1 series of plates, however, did not last forever. By 1950, some more popular areas were running out of numbers again. In order to avoid this situation, a reversed series was introduced. This meant that instead of AAA 1, they began working backwards from 1 AAA. Although, with the increasing popularity of cars, even this began to be an issue towards 1960. A new series was then introduced, a 4 number scheme from 1 A to 9999 YY.
Number plates were in the format of X111 XXX. The first letter identified the age of the car by referencing a period of time it was produced in. For example, P meant the car was produced between August 1996 & July 1997. The three numbers are randomly assigned and the first two letters told you where the car was registered. The final letter was also random.
Some sell for huge amounts of money, including those that have price tags counted in the hundreds of thousands of pounds. However, the majority of the personalised registrations you see on your commute to work or during your weekend drives were probably bought for a lot less - hundreds of pounds instead of thousands.
