The age identifier on a UK number plate is a two-digit number that indicates the age of the vehicle. The age identifier changes every six months, on 1 March and 1 September.

The age identifier is located in the middle of the number plate, between the two letters and the three random letters. For example, on the number plate BD51SMR, the age identifier is 51.

The following table shows a list of all of the age identifiers that have been used on UK number plates since 1 September 2001.

How to use the age identifier to determine the year of manufacture of a vehicle

To determine the year of manufacture of a vehicle using the age identifier, you need to know the following:

• The age identifier
• The date range that the age identifier was used

For example, if you see a vehicle with the number plate BD51SMR, you know that the vehicle was registered between 1 September 2001 and 28 February 2002. However, you cannot know for sure when the vehicle was manufactured, as it is possible that the vehicle was not registered immediately after it was manufactured.
