The First Number Plate Ever Issued

The Motor Car Act 1903, which came into force on 1 January 1904, required all motor vehicles to be entered on an official vehicle register, and to carry number plates. The Act was passed in order that vehicles could be easily traced in the event of an accident or contravention of the law. Vehicle registration number plates in the UK are rectangular or square in shape, with the exact permitted dimensions of the plate and its lettering set down in law.

As mentioned, you can also work out the general area a car came from through the first two letters of the registration plate. The first letter represents a region. For example, London is represented by L, Yorkshire is identified by Y. The next letter represents the local DVLA office, to help better pinpoint its registration area."

The AAA 1 series of plates, however, did not last forever. By 1950, some more popular areas were running out of numbers again. In order to avoid this situation, a reversed series was introduced. This meant that instead of AAA 1, they began working backwards from 1 AAA. Although, with the increasing popularity of cars, even this began to be an issue towards 1960. A new series was then introduced, a 4 number scheme from 1 A to 9999 YY.

Of course, there are some that sell for thousands of pounds, but according to the DVLA, 90 percent of the personalised number plates available on its website are for sale for less than £1,000.

This only accounts for sales by the DVLA, which only sells new personalised number plates (those that have never been issued before). There are sales of personalised number plates on the private market to add to the figures reported by the DVLA. While we don't know the exact figure this amounts to, the total sales in 2017/18 of personalised registrations was considerably more than £162 million.

Number plates were officially introduced in 1903 with the A 1 series. These private plates started at A 1 and ended at YY 9988 and was in use until 1932. The first letter was used to identify the location in which the license plate was initially registered. For example, A indicated that the number plate was registered in London.
