The First Number Plate Ever Issued

The Motor Car Act 1903, which came into force on 1 January 1904, required all motor vehicles to be entered on an official vehicle register, and to carry number plates. The Act was passed in order that vehicles could be easily traced in the event of an accident or contravention of the law. Vehicle registration number plates in the UK are rectangular or square in shape, with the exact permitted dimensions of the plate and its lettering set down in law.

NUMBER PLATE FACTS:

The A 1 series of plates, introduced in 1093, began to run out of available numbers by 1932. This meant a new scheme needed to be developed in order for more numbers to be created. This was the AAA 1 series, which went from AAA 1 all the way to YYY 999. This allowed for many more plates to be created. At this point, it was decided the letters I, Q and Z should be removed from the series as they were too easily confused with other letters.

Another reason that personalised number plates are increasingly popular is they are not just for rich people to put on very expensive cars. The reality is there are excellent registrations available for a couple of hundred pounds.

This only accounts for sales by the DVLA, which only sells new personalised number plates (those that have never been issued before). There are sales of personalised number plates on the private market to add to the figures reported by the DVLA. While we don't know the exact figure this amounts to, the total sales in 2017/18 of personalised registrations was considerably more than £162 million.

The situation is similar for private sellers even though they often offer more exclusive registrations. In other words, you don't need to be super rich to have a personalised number plate, wherever you make the purchase from. This makes them accessible to more people.

Number plates were officially introduced in 1903 with the A 1 series. These private plates started at A 1 and ended at YY 9988 and was in use until 1932. The first letter was used to identify the location in which the license plate was initially registered. For example, A indicated that the number plate was registered in London.

In 1982, the previously implemented number system had made it all the way to Y. To avoid running out of plates, the system was once again reversed making the new series A21 AAA ending at Y999 YYY. The plates began at 21 as the first 20 were kept for government vehicles to use. There was discussion throughout the 1990s about developing a Europe wide set of number plate rules. This would include a country code on each license plate. However, there was a lack of interest from several countries so the idea was put to a halt.
