The First Number Plate Ever Issued

The Motor Car Act 1903, which came into force on 1 January 1904, required all motor vehicles to be entered on an official vehicle register, and to carry number plates. The Act was passed in order that vehicles could be easily traced in the event of an accident or contravention of the law. Vehicle registration number plates in the UK are rectangular or square in shape, with the exact permitted dimensions of the plate and its lettering set down in law.

NUMBER PLATE FACTS:

Number plates were officially introduced in 1903 with the A 1 series. These private plates started at A 1 and ended at YY 9988 and was in use until 1932. The first letter was used to identify the location in which the license plate was initially registered. For example, A indicated that the number plate was registered in London.

New legislation required all vehicles registered post 1st of January 1990, to have catalytic converters installed. This caused an issue for those vehicles which had been in storage for a while as they were produced before the 1990 deadline, but would have been sold after the date of legislation. However, number plates began to run out once again towards the end of the 90s. It was time for the development of a system that could be simple for people to understand and read without changing the regular size of plates.

The current system rearranged and changed the formatting of the previous leading to the new format of XX11 XXX. Two letters, two numbers and another three letters. From this format, you can work out where a car was initially registered, the year it was registered and more specifically the 6 month period it was registered.
