Motorists would be allowed to use a single letter or a single number personalised number plate with two exceptions, on their license plates under a proposed change in state law.
Sen. Tom Nelson, R-Lead, is prime sponsor of the legislation, Senate Bill 107. The House Transportation Committee voted 11-0 today to endorse it.
“Let me put it another way. I really need you to pass this bill,” Nelson said.
Deb Hillmer, administrator for the state Division of Motor Vehicles, told the committee members that her agency isn’t opposed.
“We did request he reserve 1 and 2 for the governor and lieutenant governor. There are times they use 1 and 2 on the plates,” she said.
No opponents stepped forward to testify against the bill.
“I think this makes it easier for a Highway Patrolman to check on a license plate, so I think it’s a good idea,” Rep. Manny Steele, R-Sioux Falls, said.
Rep. Steve Hickey, R-Sioux Falls, joked that he wanted 007 reserved for his plates.
